What is chat gravel?

Chat gravel is a blend of small crushed stone and fines. At Salt Flats Rock Supply, our Storm Grey Chat and Glacier Creek Chat are both 3/8-inch-minus materials. The mix includes smaller particles as well as stone up to approximately the named size.

The fines allow chat to be leveled and compacted for garden paths, patios, areas around stepping stones and decorative ground cover. Choose the material for the way the area will be used, then compare the color with the rest of your landscape.

Gray or white chat?

Both options offer a smaller stone-and-fines texture. The main visual choice is a darker gray finish or a lighter blend.

Charcoal and gray tones create a darker finish around planting beds, stepping stones and pathways. Some customers and suppliers also call this material decomposed granite.

Match the material to your project

For a pathway or patio, consider the finished surface you want, the required depth and how the area will be used. For decorative beds, compare the chat with nearby rock, plants and hardscape.

Chat, washed pea gravel and road base have different textures and purposes. Tell us about the project and we can help you compare materials. For larger landscape stone, use our decorative rock buying guide.

How much chat gravel do you need?

Start with the area and the depth required for your project. Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324.

Example loose-volume estimates for 100 square feet
DepthCubic yards
2 inches0.62
3 inches0.93

These examples explain the calculation; choose the depth for your particular project. Compaction, grade and site conditions can affect the amount needed. Use the yardage calculator for your measurements or ask us for quantity help.

Chat gravel questions

Is Storm Grey Chat the same name as decomposed granite?

Some customers and suppliers use decomposed granite as another name for our Storm Grey Chat. We list the product as Storm Grey Chat, 3/8-inch minus. Compare the actual material, color and size when matching a product sold under another name.

What does “minus” mean?

Minus describes a mix that includes smaller particles and fines, rather than uniform stones of one size. Our two chat products are listed as 3/8-inch minus.

Can you help measure my area?

Yes. Consultations and measurement visits are free. Send a free measurement request for Monday–Thursday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Our team will contact you to confirm the visit. A request does not reserve an appointment.
