Decorative Rock in Northern Utah
Find the color, stone size and shape that fit your landscape. Compare decorative rock and river cobble, estimate cubic yards, and plan pickup or delivery from our paved Syracuse supply yard.
Start with size, shape and color
Choose a material for the area you are covering: landscape beds, park strips, decorative borders, areas around trees and shrubs, or a dry creek feature. Then compare the stone with the plants, pavers and other materials already in your landscape.
Size: A product labeled “minus” includes smaller pieces as well as stone up to approximately the named size. Compare the actual material when choosing the texture and scale you want.
Shape: Angular decorative rock has a different appearance from rounded river cobble. For a finer material that can be leveled and compacted, explore chat gravel and its uses.
Color: Light rock, dark gray rock and mixed natural tones each create a different look. Natural stone varies between loads, so a visit to the yard is useful when matching an existing project.

How much decorative rock do you need?
Measure the length and width of each area, then choose the depth for the stone and project. For many landscape rock projects, 2–3 inches is a starting point. Larger stone and specific site conditions can call for a different depth; ask us before ordering if you are unsure.
| Area | Depth | Cubic yards |
|---|---|---|
| 200 square feet | 2 inches | 1.23 |
| 200 square feet | 3 inches | 1.85 |
The calculation is square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep or 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. Use our cubic yard calculator for rectangular, circular or triangular areas.

Decorative rock questions
What is the difference between decorative rock and chat?
Our decorative rock products offer larger stone sizes and a range of angular or rounded shapes. Our two chat products are 3/8-inch-minus blends of small crushed stone and fines that can be leveled and compacted. Use the chat gravel guide to compare gray and white options for paths, patios and ground cover.
Is decorative rock sold by the cubic yard?
Yes. Our bulk decorative rock is sold by the cubic yard. Measure the area and planned depth, then use the calculator or ask us for help with the amount.
Can I match rock that is already in my yard?
Bring a sample or clear photos and compare the current material in person. Names, colors and sizes can vary among suppliers, and natural rock can change between quarry loads.
