Topsoil in Northern Utah: Standard vs. Premium

Choose soil for the job you’re doing, estimate the cubic yards, and plan pickup or delivery. Salt Flats Rock Supply carries Standard Screened Topsoil and Premium Sandy Loam Topsoil for homeowners and contractors in Davis and Weber counties.

Which topsoil should you choose?

Filling, leveling & grading

Standard Screened Topsoil

Screened native soil for filling low areas, leveling and rough or final grading. It is also used for lawn preparation and garden or planting-bed projects.

Start here when you need additional soil volume and a practical grading material. For planting, consider the existing soil and what you intend to grow.

Lawns, gardens & planting

Premium Sandy Loam Topsoil

Screened sandy loam with organic matter and more nutrients than our Standard Topsoil. Premium is our best all-around option for lawns, gardens and planting projects.

Consider it for seed or sod preparation, flower beds, raised beds, trees, shrubs and final landscape grading where growing conditions are a priority.

Both are sold by the cubic yard. Check the product pages for current prices and contact us to confirm availability for your order.

Start with your project: Is the main goal adding volume, preparing a planting area, or improving soil already in place? That answer helps determine whether to order Standard, Premium or a soil conditioner.

Topsoil or Soil Pep?

Topsoil supplies the soil volume for your project. Soil Pep Soil Conditioner is a blend of composted forest products and composted steer manure used to amend existing soil or as a top-dressing mulch.

If the bed is already at the right height but needs organic matter, ask about Soil Pep. If you need to raise or fill an area, calculate the topsoil volume first. Soil Pep alone is not a universal replacement for topsoil.

For a new garden or raised bed, discuss the plants, bed depth and existing soil before choosing a blend. There is no single amendment ratio that fits every project.

How much topsoil do you need?

Measure length and width in feet, then decide how many inches of soil you need to add. Split irregular spaces into smaller areas and add their volumes.

Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324

Example: a 10 × 20-foot area (200 square feet)
Added depthCalculated volume
2 inches1.23 cubic yards
3 inches1.85 cubic yards
4 inches2.47 cubic yards
6 inches3.70 cubic yards

These are volume examples, not recommended soil depths. Your project determines the required depth. Discuss uneven ground, settling and your finished grade before deciding the final order quantity.

One cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. Soil weight varies with the material and moisture, so confirm hauling capacity rather than using one fixed tons-per-yard estimate.

Check the soil, not just the color

Utah State University Extension identifies texture, organic matter, soluble salts, pH and nutrients as important soil-quality factors. Appearance alone cannot establish suitability for planting.

For demanding planting projects or problem areas, a soil test can help you compare your existing soil with a proposed addition and decide whether amendments are needed. Ask about current material before placing a large order.

Topsoil buying questions

Is Premium Topsoil worth choosing for a lawn or garden?

Premium is our best all-around option for lawns and planting because it is screened sandy loam with organic matter and more nutrients than Standard. Standard remains an option for general filling, leveling and grading. The right choice depends on your existing soil and project.

Does screened topsoil mean weed-free soil?

No. Screening describes a physical processing step; it does not establish that soil is weed-free or verify its nutrient levels, pH or salt content.

Can I use Soil Pep instead of topsoil?

Soil Pep is a conditioner and mulch. Use it according to your soil-improvement or surface-mulch needs rather than assuming it can replace the entire soil volume in a lawn or garden bed.

Can you help measure my project?

Yes. Free measurement and consultation requests are available Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM Mountain Time. Contact us to request an appointment. Our team must confirm the appointment.
