Black bark or brown bark?

The main choice between our two color-enhanced mulches is the appearance you want. Black bark creates a darker contrast around greenery and lighter stone. Mocha brown gives the bed a warm brown finish. Both are finely shredded wood mulches.

When to choose Soil Pep

Consider Soil Pep when the job includes amending existing soil or top dressing a planting bed. It is a composted blend with a different composition and purpose from color-enhanced bark. Tell us whether you are mixing material into soil or spreading it on the surface so we can help with the amount.

How much mulch do you need?

Measure the length and width of each bed, then choose the depth appropriate for the selected material and project. Account for mulch already in place when planning a top-up.

Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324.

For example, a 20-foot × 10-foot bed is 200 square feet. The table shows loose-volume estimates at three example depths.

Example quantities for 200 square feet
DepthCubic yards
2 inches1.23
3 inches1.85
4 inches2.47

These examples explain volume; they are not a depth recommendation for every material. Settling, the existing layer and site conditions affect how much to order. Use our cubic yard calculator or ask for quantity help.

Landscape mulch depth depends on the texture of the material and the plants. Keep mulch away from tree trunks instead of mounding it against the base. For more landscape guidance, see Utah State University Extension’s mulch guide.

Playground projects: confirm the required depth for the equipment, fall height and project requirements before calculating or ordering. Ordinary planting-bed examples do not establish playground requirements.

Buying by the cubic yard

These bulk materials are sold by the cubic yard. A cubic yard measures volume, not weight. Mulch weight varies with the material and moisture, so a single tons-per-yard figure is not a reliable guide for every product or load.

For pickup, check your truck or trailer’s payload and bed capacity before arriving. Call 801-941-6493 if you need help planning the load or arranging delivery.
